How to winterize a pump or waterworks

How to winterize a surface pump
The simplest procedure is for surface pumps, which are most often used for watering gardens.
These pumps have a drain plug or other element to drain the water.
- So you disconnect the hoses from the machine and tilt the pump to let the water flow out.
- The pump must then be flushed with fresh water to prevent deposits. This is particularly important if the water you use is too hard, contains high levels of iron or minerals. Then store the pump in a dry room.
For cast iron pumps, it is recommended to refit the plug after flushing, fill the pump with potable water and store it in a dry room where it will not freeze.
How to winterize a domestic water pump
Domestic waterworks are usually in operation all year round, so they are usually ready for winter operation when they are installed. Exceptions are waterworks in holiday homes such as cottages and lodges, where the domestic waterworks are primarily used during the summer. In the event that the water room could freeze, you must drain the water from the entire installation.
- You turn off the waterworks by unplugging it and drain it by first opening the drain valves on the shut-off valve behind the waterworks.
- Then drain the water from the discharge line and pressure vessel and then unscrew the drain plugs of the body and drain the pump.
- Screw in the drain plug just before starting again. It is recommended that the plugs be lubricated with tallow, cooking grease or petroleum jelly.
